Start now - many vitamins and minerals need time to "build up" in your system over time. Plus, the nutrition can help increase your fertility when you start TTC. Usually, you can make a quick call to your doctor, explain the situation, and have a prescription started by phone. Or, look into OTC varieties - there are some that offer appropriate dosages.
In the meantime, you should also consider preparing your body in other ways. Cut back or eliminate alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, etc. Start or maintain a reasonable exercise routine. Take a look at your diet and make sure you're getting a good variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Take care of any outstanding health problems, including a full dental exam while you can still get x-rays, and make sure your pap is up to date. Try to avoid any unnecessary exposure to toxic chemicals, etc, especially if you work around them. Most importantly - spend time relaxing and looking forward to this exciting time in your life!

You should start taking prenatals when you decide you to have a baby. If I were you and planning on trying to conceive in 6 months, I would start now. What could it hurt?? They'll just help get your body healthy for baby.
