Art and Music require talent

I find the whole idea of playing by ear - by which people usually mean: people with little or no musical training being able to play music on a man-made instrument merely upon hearing it - really extraordinary. I have never met anybody who can actually do it. If people really can do this, it is more than a talent; it is a miracle.

Lots of trained musicians, however, can translate music they hear into note patterns and then play it back. This is through recognition of the intervals between the notes being played. Obviously, some people are better at this than others. It comes down to a mixture of talent, skill and experience. Some people can do it so quickly that it appears 'natural'.

Yes, it is a talent and no, not everyone can do it. I had to struggle just to learn Mary Had a Little Lamb on the piano. It was memorizing a series of keystrokes, not responding to the notes. I won't say I am tone deaf, because I have been trained to sing pretty well at times, but it sure don't come natural. And I know for some people, it does. They hear it, they can play it or sing it. I envy. Believe me, I envy.

It's a talent where not everyone can do it. My three sisters and I all took piano lessons. My youngest sister can play by ear. None of the rest of us can do.

Not everyone can do this. I feel some people have an exceptionally good ear that lets them do it is all.
