In Law - If it's just a standard van or truck, you just need a full driving licence and appropriate insurance. A full car licence is appropriate for a 7.5 tonne vehicle, you dont need a HGV licence
if you are working for an agency or company, they may ask for experience of using a tachometer, curtain sided vehicles, tail lift, or whatever before they will let you loose with *that* type of vehicle

If you've passed your driving test in the last ten years or so you won't be covered on it - only up to a 3.5 tonne vehicle. People who passed before then are able to drive on a standard British licence - you should check the terms on your licence first. If you aren't covered you will need to take an additional test.
Also if you are using the vehicle for any business purpose you need to have an operators licence - it's ok if you are using it for a house move but otherwise you won't be covered

If you passed your Class B (car) test BEFORE January 1st 1997, you can drive one.
If you passed your Class B test AFTER January 1st 1997, you will need to be over 21 and pass a Class C1 test, to gain entitlement.
