It's onbe of the oldest among Greek myths. You could view it as a morality tale about obeying those who know and not being too curious... sort of a Greek version of the biblical tale of Original Sin.

After Prometheus stole fire and gave it to men, the gods decided to punish them, but to let them suffer through their own doing.

So they fashioned a woman who was showered with gifts (the name "Pandora" means "all gifted") She was beautiful, a great musician, a skilful healer, gifted for agriculture and other domestic pursuits, and she had beautiful objects fashioned by the gods for her : jewels fashioned by Hephistos, clothes woven by Athena ... and a mysterious box or wine jar (a "pithos" says Hesiod) that she was warned never to open, lest bad things befall. She was given as a wife to the titan Epimetheus, who had created most men, and who was their leader at the time, as his brother Prometheus was imprisoned for stealing fire. A the time, men live in an earthly paradise, without care or worry.

But among the "gifts" the gods had bestowed on Pandora, she had been made curious, idle and crafty. So curiosity got the better of her, and one day, she opened the "box" to see what was inside, and freed all the evil spirits that were trapped inside, and have been tormenting mankind ever since. They suffer from ills, and sickness, and must toil for their livelihood

Pandora's Box comes from greek mythology. You see after the men of iron were made(they werent literaly made of iron it is just a way to describe their will) they made a mistake and angered the gods. So to punish them Hera gave them a new being, a woman(there were no female humans before this), this womans name was Pandora. She was beutiful but a handful. She was told never to open the box because it contained all of the bad things that are in the world today. But like a woman she didnt listen and she opened the box letting all the evil go but one. This one "Evil" that was left was hope. Hope was there because it could be used for good. Or it can be seen as evil. So hope was left in the box to be used by man kind when any see it fit.
And thats all I know of pandora's box. Im guessing what it means when some says dont open Pandora's box is saying not to let the bad things from somthing out, or it means the unknown. There you go.

It is for a spiritual sense that exists in all religions. But diffeent stories. For example, in the monotheistic religion of abraham(pbuh) there is the story of the tree of knowledge. Pandoras box revolves around the same principal. What is inside of the box, should have stayed there. Once opened, it unleashed fury, anger, lust, covets, hate, etc. When adam(pbuh) and eve ate from the tree, they knew from right and wrong. And even though they were naked, they were ashamed after eating from the tree. For once they ate, the existance changed. Same with pandoras box. Once it was opened, existance changed. The question is, who opened it?

The meaning behind pandoras box is, inside the box there are many evil things. And one should not open it. Like how we joke and be like, "Don't push the red button.". But some numbskull always ends up pushing the red button out of curiosity or just to be a jerk. Not knowing what the consequences will be. But just pushed it to see what will happen. You know, the "what if?" scenerio. Well, that is how I interperated it anyways. PEACE!

It was a box hold in all evil things. Because the gods wanted to punish mortals they gave the box to Pandora......along with curiosity........and told her not to open it. She of course opened it letting out all of the demons in the world today........illness, murder, rape, and on and on. She managed to close it in time to not let out the last thing. it was letting people know all of the misfortunes that would face them in their lifetime. This would have been the destruction of the world because nobody could live without hope.

The version I have been given in Intro to Greek Mythology is that Pandora's 'jar' become quite a metaphor for her womb. She become created by applying Zeus, by another gods as a punishment for mankind, and as something to set against the hearth which Prometheus gave them. So actual, she comes down from Olympus along with her "jar" (aka womb) as a capture for adult males, spreads her legs and out come each and all the illnesses, curses, hatred and jealousy. yet what enormously sucks is that desire continues to be in there, trapped in her womb!! So the only desire for adult males is to maintain having intercourse with women folk interior the hopes of having toddlers. IOW, Pandora is truthfully the unique 'women folk, won't be able to stay with them, won't be able to stay without them.' archetype.

In Greek mythology, Pandora ("all gifted") was the first woman, fashioned by Zeus as part of the punishment of mankind for Prometheus' theft of the secret of fire. Zeus gave her a box and told her not to open it. According to the myth, Pandora opened the box thus releasing all the miseries of mankind—greed, vanity, slander, envy, pining etc. She managed to close it in time to leave hope inside. I hope I was helpful.

Something along the lines of:
Pandora is given a box. Told not to open it. She opens it. Out comes all the world's evil.

It is about Pandora in the box... (sick) :o) ... but to me it is about the apple that the serpent had been offering in the garden of Adam and Eve.
