I read lots of books, plenty about the search for the holy grail or some other archaeological evidence that Christianity and catholicism is based on lies, anyone read any good ones based on other major religions?

I was watching a programme on the scared feminine in religion and the presenter mentioned Salman Rusdies Satanic Verses, its like Islams Da Vinchi Code (but I'd imagine better written, but at a slower pace)

There is an interesting series of novels that dissect the idea of conspiracies and religion, The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson

This follows the exploits of a series of people as they learn about various esoteric cults and secret societies (many of these are based on 'fact'). By the end you and they should have come to an understanding about why conspiracies become more prevalent the more you look for them...

They are fairly pornographic though, so only for mature readers!

Robert Anton Wilson has also written many other fictional and theoretical texts about our belief systems, coincidence and religion.

They obviously aren't very good books. Archaeological evidence and historical fact prove that Jesus existed. Christianity is not based on lies - whether or not Jesus was God's Son is a matter for religious believers to decide.

Writers aren't interested in writing books on Islam because they will be killed if they do. Look at Salman Rushdie - he lives under 24 hour armed guard.

You may find "Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism" by John Shelby Spong an interesting read. It's not necessarily conspiracy unless you are already a "fundamentalist", but just some ideas that get you thinking.

I agree with minimetro, if you speak out against 'other' religions you get killed.
