Most people are more of disgusted rather than scared especially in hospitals.I am a medical student but i still hate even the thought of needles.Its just plain nasty to think of a hollow needle inflicting pain on you all in the name of cure!!!!!!!
If you are scared of needles and blood.............well you can get over it but i suggest you make sure you don't get diabetes.
The easiest way to get over it is by facing it.I got over my haemophobia(if this word exists) by scrubing in on a surgery in my 1st year.

I am going to go out on a limb here with my answer. It could be from another life in another time. You were a lab rat and being pricked all the time. The blood part, is the shock to the brain, knowing that life's very fluid is draining from the body. How's that for an answer?

seeing blood lets you think that its your blood, which is intrinsically a bad thing to let out of yourself. as for needles its the absolute knowing that pain is coming.

The anticipation of it is what freezes me ! God i hate needles, IT FREAKS ME OUT. Yes, i ought to mention its my phobia.
Then the long wait, knowing that your blood is being sucked out. Oh i think im gonna collapse.

Maybe is the idea of letting others to cause you pain. Where as you might cause physical pain to yourself and wont matter.
