you can try other media and see if you can use them.
A better idea is to open your pc, look on the outside of your cd player to see if you find more information.
You should at least see the model name of the box.
then what you do is go to google to find more information on that box. You may even find the user's guide of the box ...

It wil only play CD unless it also says DVD on it.
If you go to start > my computer it will list the drives, put no disc in the drive and it will say dvd if it is a dvd drive. You can also right click on it and choose properties then hardware for more information.
If you want a DVD drive you can get a dvd read only drive for as little as £10 or a dvd witer for £40 or less.

Compact disk will not play DVD disks.
You can use it to install programs, and it will play music cd's.
if it is a CD r/w you will also be able to write files to a cd R/w or CD R disk and keep them on disk for future use.
