Historically Wirral was in Cheshire, the boundary between Cheshire and Lancashire was the river Mersey.

When the government (1974 I think) decided to have new unitary authorities Merseyside was created and included most of Wirral.

When Unitary authorities where scrapped by Thatcher, Merseyside lost its authority but still retained geographical organisations(ie Merseyside police, Meseyside fire brigade).

Wirral is technically in Merseyside, but many residents are adamant that they belong to Cheshire.

No The City of Liverpool occupies the northern bank of the River Mersey, The Wirral is the peninsular on the southern bank which includes towns such as Birkenhead and Wallasey. The county of Merseyside was created in 1974 to unify the area, and included Liverpool and Wirral, but this authority lost most of its powers in the early 80's and only exists today in organisations such as Merseyside Police, Fire and rescue and transport authority. Liverpool historically belonged to the county of Lancashire, Wirral has always been part of Cheshire.

Wirral is a shortened version of "The Wirral Peninsular" Liverpool sits proudly on the other side of the River Mersey. Wirral can access Liverpool by car (through the Mersey Tunnel) by train on the underground or on the much loved ferries. That a bit clearer for you?

The northern part constitutes the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in Merseyside, and the southern part the borough of Ellesmere Port and Neston in Cheshire. Previously it was entirely in Cheshire

Hello,

(ANS) I come from Liverpool orginally myself, WIRRAL is part of Merseyside and Merseryside is in Lancashire. This gets abit confusing because wirral is so close to the boundary/border with North Wales and places like Chester.

It used to be classified as Merseyside, but the postcodes for most of Wirral are now CHxx, which means it's officially in Cheshire.
