of course it is. the afterlife, and the concept of heaven (and also hell) was created for a few reasons:

The first reason is to clam the pain of losing a loved one. For centuries the concept of going to heaven makes one believe that death is not so bad after all. If you've ever heard someone say "he's gone to a better place" (meaning he died) then why why why why why don't we all jump in front of a truck so we too can die and "go to a better place"? This is why . . . because deep down, we know that no such place exists and that being alive is much better than being dead.

Another reason is to bring order and structure to civilization. If you scare people into thinking that if they don't behave then they go to "hell", then people believe it and they do it. But it goes completely against human nature, as made completely obvious by the catholic priests who molest boys.

There is no afterlife. The only thing there is is repercussions of what you leave behind for the next generation.

Ive pondered this many times, but I have a memory even at 52 years old of a time of before birth and being born and in between ..It has to be true because Its one of the few memories that I can still remember in my childhood and it was from a time at birth and before.I have never forgotten it.. sometimes i say yes its an excuse and other times i have to say that over 87 percent of the worlds population believes in reincarnation ..what makes us so unsure..

The afterlife is a personal perspective. Some believe in it, some don't, some are into reincarnation.
Look at your avatar. You faded into nothing, and are still very much alive.

I don't think so, I have had some experiences with dying and I think there is something more to life than this. Only time will tell though. :)

Not an excuse - wrong word there - more of an insurance policy.
