swallowing is under voluntary control, the tongue propels the bolus of food (chewed up food) into the pharynx. Coordinated voluntary movement of the pharyngeal muscles allows food into the upper esophagus. Once inside the esophagus, the food is propelled towards the stomach via a peristaltic wave.
