Try the site booking.com. you can see a lot of ratings on the hotels in Amsterdam from people that spend the night there, which can be very helpful.

From experience with them for a trip to Vienna I can say that I get better prices there(booking.com) than with for instance expedia or hotels.com.

You might always try hostelworld.com or see some private owned on hostelz.com

Dont go with anyone that asks you when you get off the train cos they are crappy dorms.

When you get to the train station, head streight out down the main road, you cant miss it. Theres lots of hotels there and they are all centrally placed. was about three years ago but worked out about £16 a night, 3star hotel.

don't book before you go..
use the V.V.V. outside the station they will find somewhere for you.. also get your tram tickets while you are there..
