Golds and diamonds are so expensive because they are rare stones. You cannot just find it anywhere.

Because the diamond mineral is generated out of coal which is millions years old.
And gold is rare. It may be found in very small amounts like pieces of sand. Besides, a gold crown may stay under water or in mud etc for many hundreds years and won't be spoiled at all - it has such abilities not to react with it or let it stick.

Rare, beautiful and do not corrode or break down when exposed to air or water. The gold mask of Agamemnon (look him up) in the National Museum of Greece is a beautiful object which spent over 2,000 years buried in the soil without any sign of damage.

Gold is the metal that reacts with least other materials. its chemical composition is such. that tendency of least reaction makes it rare. other metals react with lemon, sweat, water, sugar, acids etc but gold does not.

Diamond amongst all stones is the most clear, shiny, strongest. it can even split the stone into two . not only as a jewel it is also used in most surgical and manufacturing appliances. again its strength is so unique that it does not break easily and thus is the hardest, strongest stone and yet so beautiful.
