Also, do you have to have a ring to begin with, or can a thick stud be used?? Does anyone know of a reputable place in Edinburgh where they are hygenic and safe?? Thanks.

Please, no telling me not to do it, or that it's ugly, I've made up my mind!

a piercing gun should not be used on anything except earlobes - even then i wouldn't recommend it.

the reason i say this is because a piercing gun uses brute force to punch a hole in the skin with the stud, it's an incredibly crude way of creating a hole in skin compared to a sharp needle.

plus, given that it's a punching motion that creates the hole if the person doing it moves their hand or has the gun against the bone inside of your nose then once they pull that trigger you'll have a lovely broken nose to show off.

as mentioned beforehand, a gun is hard to sterilise but the kind of places that use a gun in the first place don't tend to know anything about preventing infection anyhow - they've simply bought a cheap gun and are willing to use it on people.

catching yourself a dose of hepatitis or a broken nose just isn't worth it for the sake of saving a couple of quid by going to some dodgy backstreet place who don't even clean their equipment.

in terms of finding a good place word of mouth is the best way, ask people you know who have piercings. if not, pay a visit to a few in edinburgh and go with the cleanest.

myself, although my tattoo place has a piercer i have always went to the same place for my piercings - a dedicated piercing studio that is spotless and the piercer friendly.

Go with a needle and have it done by a professional. I don't understand why anyone would use a gun! And on their nose of all places. I had mine done 2 years ago, first with a stud (which fell out so i had to have it re-pierced) now i have a ring. The needle in no way hurt me. It made my eyes water but thats normal. Besides its a fun experience to sit there with the needle through your nose for a sec hahaha. Please don't do it yourself really. Unless you happen to have an sterilization autoclave lying about the house. Just think what if you hesitate while doing it and mess something up. Just go to a pro and it will be done in less than 10 minutes. You won't regret it. And congrats on the choice for a nose ring/stud. I love mine and am waaaayyy to damn stubborn to get rid of it ever haha.

i've seen both being done - my friend had hers pierced by needle, and it really brought tears to her eyes ! a guy i know had his done by piercing gun, and although it still caused some pain, it was over with a lot quicker. personally, if i was going to have it done, i'd go with the gun option. no point in putting yourself through unnecessary pain (unless u like that kind of thing !) all gun piercings should be hygienic & safe as the person piercing u should have had training, and all the equipment will be sterile. to be on the safe side, buy yourself some surgical spirits from a chemists, and some cotton buds. that way u will be able to clean the piercing both on the outside and inside of your nose. i'm afraid i don't know edinburgh well enough to reccommend a particular place, but u usually are able to get the feel of the place just by going in..... if u go in and u don't like the look of the place, walk out - find somewhere else. good luck !

I had mine done when i was a teen, with a gun and it hurt like hell. They can use a stud, with the gun, and you need to keep it in a while until you can safely change the jewellry over.
I hear these days most reputable body piercers use a needle on the nose. I think the gun damages the tissue and takes longer to heal, a piercer told me once

I think a very well sterilized gun should be used because I believe its more accurate and fast and I don't think you would feel as much pain as if you use the needle... that's all I can say. I don't live in Edinburgh so I can't help you with the rest...

I'm planning to get my ears pierce again so I can wear 2 sets of earrings my diamonds earrings and regular once ;)

I have my nose pierced and I love it and I dont give a hoot what anyone else thinks. But they use a needle and they dont start you out with a big ring. They put a little stud in it. Dont do the piercing gun or you'll get a hugh lump in or outside the hole

They used a gun on my nose pierce and I kept the stud they used until it was completely healed. Then I could put my own rings.

I found the needle to be cleaner and easier (new needle each time, gun is just soaked and reused) The needle of course does not bang and you dont get your skin pinched in the process. I was told by a government approved parlour in Canada, to get the hoop while healing, as you will swell and you need to have room to swell and the hoop will slide and allow that extra space for easier cleaning.

I had my nose pierced with a gun and always had a stud in it. Check out tattooists that do piercings.. can't help with a location though.

Good luck!!

at first they will use a large stud so the hole doesnt close. it depends where you go, some places will use the gun whereas piercing bars will use the needle.
