Depends on the sculpture and how you will be sculpting.

Balsa wood is very soft wood and relatively easy to carve with had tools. It isn't very good for getting a nice woodgrain finish though.

Teak, olivewood, and maple are very hard and require a certain level of skill and patience. However, the result is a very well grained and usually beautiful end result. Hardwoods can be carved with hand tools, but the tools will take a beating. A rotary tool is best for these woods.

You can use, quite literally, ANY kind of wood for sculpture. Don't limit yourself to commercially processed, "brand new" wood, either! Go hiking--pick up some something interesting (I use cactus skeletons, which are wonderful!). Scour secondhand shops, driveway cast-offs (a.k.a., "trash"), lumber yard debris piles, yard sale "freebies," etc., for wood--be it in the shape of broken furniture, small angular pieces from construction projects, etc. Think outside the box. Before spending money on something from a home improvement center, think about rescuing something from the eventual fate of a landfill. I've done a lot of sculpture. In my experience, these "rescued" pieces make for much better art!

Good luck with your sculpture!

Basswood is commonly sold for carving and I have seen Tulipwood also.
With GOOD SHARP tools almost any wood can be craved.

If it's small, try Balsa wood.
