In reply to the answerer below, Appleby was the historic county town, but the county council was based in Kendal.

It has never been the administrative centre. Kendal was the largest town in the County of Westmorland (though not the capital which was Appleby), before it became part of Cumbria. It was a one of the country's main manufacturing towns from the 14th Century until the 19th Century, with many mills on the River Kent. There are four road bridges in Kendal over the River Kent.

It was probably called the Lake District....now Cumbria, but don't quote me because I'm not sure.
