Sound like timing or air/petrol mixture incorrect, assuming it's petrol and not diesel. Has it been using more fuel than normal lately? It should'nt be a huge job for a garage to fix, a good thorough service should sort it, so if they say it's major and try to charge you a fortune, go somewhere else.

It's called deiseling.
If your car has a deisel engine, it has to finish burning the fuel out of the motor before it stops running in order to avoid locking up the motor. It's normal and a little more noticeable in the colder weather.
If your car has a gas engine, There are quite a few causes. The most benign of wich is dirty valves. Other causes are a stretched or skipped timing chain or belt, a sticky relay, dirty fuel, shorted coil, etc. It's harder to tell without more info. I'd recommend looking at these before going to a mechanic.

Helena R, sounds like it `s running to rich or the choke is sticking on (automatic choke?) i would get a mobile tune-up to come and give the car a good tune -up rather than go to a garage, you can watch him work ,ask him questions and get a read out at the end of it, i have used Watford tune -up on old cars (sweeney) and always learnt something into the bargain ,they will come to your work if if you want, all the best ,John Boy.

If your car only ran for a short time and then shut down you have what is called engine run on. It is caused by using the wrong grade of fuel or fuel with water in it. If it ran after you shut it off and you had to disconnect the battery to stop it. then I'm afraid you need a new ignition switch.

First try a better fuel with higher octane when you fill it up buy a bottle of octane to add to your gas, that will take the water out, most of the time if a car won't turn off it's because of cheep gas. If that don't work-Next change your spark plugs, you may have one or more misfire,If your still having the problem have the timing checked.

Something's very hot and causing it to "run on" without benefit of the ignition. It could be the plugs, it could be that it's in need of a decoke, it could be that the timing's a bit out - several things, really.
