The Afghans have been dishing out punishment and defeat to foreigners for several hundred years not only the last few. The British of all people should have learned from history and left well alone. The recent debacle stems from Bush's declaration of war on terrorism. Who was he threatening? Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Libya, Israel, Russia, Pakistan? Why was he surprised when he bit off more than he could chew? The one answer to all these questions is George Bush is an idiot.

Because the Taliban Regime was funding and allowing Terrorist Camps in the country. The Russians were actually containing the afgans to stop them operating in southern Russia and invaded for similer reasons. The hills and Mountains of Afghanistan are littrally the best country for Gorrilla Tactics. With Caves and high passes galore. Very Difficult territory.

Um the soviets were unable to do in 8 years what we did in 2. The other point is that the Us was helping the Afgans back then and nobody is really helping the Taliban now. The Taliban kicked most of the true Afgans out of their own country and only ruled through fear. That is why most Afganies help us kick tali butt

look when your trying to take peoples minds off important issues how do you do it?
well you get your people all worked up about some small nation or other then go and start invading that nation. what the we brits failed to take into account was the fact that these people are a proud and blood thirsty people who dont value life as much as we do in the west.
you only had to listen to our american cousins in the bulid up to the invasion of afganistan going on about these people being backwards and living in the dark ages and how they where gonna bomb them back to the stone ages.
when you insult a nation like that your gonna get a bloody nose form the people your taking on.

What are you talking about?
The U.S. and U.K. didn't go into Afghanistan during the Cold War.
The U.S. and NATO went into Afghanistan some 5+ years ago to overthrow the Taliban regime that provided refuge for al-Qaeda, and to catch Osama. It had nothing to do with the Russians.

"stupid thing" ? Ah....the U.S. military's efforts in Afghanistan have been incredibly successful, and that speaks to the superiority of the U.S. forces vs. Soviet era Russian forces.

Because both governments have to show their people that they are doing something to fight the war on terror - whether it is justitified or winnable or not. It is to keep the majority of each population happy that we will not stand back without retribution.
