As evidenced by my picture, I do goth. That's hardly all, though.
My single favorite make-up item is a sort of colorless primer called Dr. Feelgood by Physician's Formula. It makes your skin feel fresh, even under whatever wacky stuff you do with it.
As for styles, I think using just a hint of a very vivid color on the eyes is great. Pick a color that complements your eyes (mine are green, so royal blue looks great on me) and use it in ONE PLACE, like just as mascara (caboodles makes some interesting colors), or as shadow or liner right along the eye. For the lips, go for minimal, so you have the interest focused.
On an everyday basis (as in, not goth), because I'm so pale and have extremely translucent skin I use a hint of very pale blush on cheeks and eyelids (great color for deathly pale folks like me is Covergirl's Cheekers in snow plum), put on some soft black mascara (Jane's fan club is good), and use a lot of chapstick.
If you have the time, don't be afraid to do something bold.

I had the same question and here is what i think is the answer:
Do you have sensitive, breakout prone skin? Or do you simply want your skin to look flawless all the time, without clogging it? If so, Physicians Formula is for you!
I'm sorry. I sound like an advertisement, but it's true! I swear by their foundation line. I am currently using three of their products for my face, and you can't even tell I'm wearing it! All Physicians Formula products are hypoallergenic and won't clog pores.
Mineral Wear pressed powder:
Ever put on talc based powder which is too drying or chalky (if you look close, you can see the little fine hairs on your face coated with powder)? This powder doesn't do that! Even if your skin is a little flakey, this powder will not enhance it! Sometimes with other powders, your skin will look so matte it will look fake. This powder gets rid of oily looking shine (and continue to sop up oil throughout the day) and has natural light reflectors, so your skin will glow. The main job of this powder is to eliminate oily looking shine, cover up minor imperfections, and to make pores look miniscule!
Physicians Formula under eye concealer:
When you first see this stick form of make-up, you’ll think, “What the—it’s YELLOW!” The truth is, yellow counteracts dark circles. When you put it on, you won’t see yellow, you will see your eyes, not the dark bags under them!
Physicians Formula concealer:
This is my saviour for the big red demons! The stick make-up is actually green. The green counteracts the redness in the pimple and makes it virtually invisible under foundation.
When you look at these products in stores, you’ll notice they are more expensive than the average line of make-up. You use a lot less of these products than you do of others, because you only need a little bit to look great! If you’re still a little wary, try buying them at a place like Wal*Mart where you can take stuff back after trying it!!!!

I tried it all and the best ones are Benefit and Shiseido. Benefit is really good for your skin, it gives it minerals, etc. while its on, but it doesnt last long. It'll look fresh for no longer than 4 hrs.
Shiseido has AMAZING covering, its oil free, looks fresh, and lasts for a looong time. I wore it for 13 hrs once without having to retouch it. Its real good and it looks natural.

Benefit. There foundation--Some Kinda Gorgeous is great. It doesn't get gooey or itchy and covers amazingly well. It's one color fits all (I don't know how they do it!) so I don't know how it would work on women of color.
