I work for a major non-profit hospital in Virginia, as a Nursing Assistant. My hospital provided a 5 day class in Nursing Assisting, and the rest has been on the job training. They DO NOT certify anyone. Is there a state certification board I can go to and take an exam? Do I need to take an actual college course? I would like to do private duty on the side.

The deparment of health in your state regulates CNA's, you might want to check with your local community college, typically, the course is about a semester. :-)

If you have not gone to school, how will you ever know how to do this job? Any employer wants to see your credentials. If you have none, then you are not hired. How will they explain you to a state licensing agency?
