Despite being great when they work they do not have a great reputation for durability. Normally after a year (when the warranty expires) things start to go wrong. My old one's battery life went down to about 5 minutes and occassionally it would lock. A few friends of mine have all had similar problems where they've died or locked.

Another problem would be if you then change to another type of MP3 player as the ipod downloads are not compatible.

That said I still think they are great when they work and I still keep buying them.

You need to use iTunes. I might just be fussy, but I *really* hate that they make you use their own software. I have 17GB of music and 200 playlists, and just the thought of having to convert all that in iTunes gives me the grues.

With my current mp3 player I just plugged it into the USB, my computer recognised it as a remote device and I dragged and dropped my entire music folder into it. It took half an hour to upload and when I went to check the player, all my music and Winamp playlists were intact and working perfectly.

It's 100% doable to have a drag & drop interface, so Apple are *purposely* designing iPods to be harder to use because they want people to use their software an no one else's.

They're overpriced, have crap batteries, tie you into iTunes and you'll look like every other clone out there. Do a bit of research and get yourself the player that suits you best. Personally I like the Creative and iRiver machines.

None. I don't knwo why the person below claims that it's difficult to put songs on. You just plug it into the computer and it does it all for you.

The main disadvantage of any portable music player, is lousy sound quality.

Most people don't worry about that, though...
