Or to spell color instead of colour. Would a teacher not find this spelling incorrect as we were brought up to spell programme not program

Program is correct these days.
Colour still retains the 'u' (and all the other similar words: neighbour, harbour, labour, etc.)

Being English, I work on the principle that a television (etc) programME is spelt thus, but software for a computer is spelt 'program' Missing the 'u' out of 'colour', 'neighbour' etc is an American habit - although I have seen old English manuscripts which spell 'valor' thus without the 'u'.

There is some conflict between American and British spelling because the Americans fell out with Britain (American War of Independence) and changed a of of spelling to be different.
Frankly I think 'nite' looks ugly while 'night' has some grace about it - but I am a Brit and hence biased.

In Australia, one of the guides to spelling is the Style Manual found in all Government offices and also used by the ABC. The favoured spelling is "program". Words such as colour, vapour, labour, honour etc are all spelt with a "u" except for Labor in the Australian Labor Party.

If your teacher objects to "program" refer him/her to the Government Style Manual.

I guess it would be programme and colour since the Australians follow British English right?

"Program" is how the Aussies spell that one. "Color" is how we do this one. Being an American though you would need to spell the way they teach it over there, they get mighty pompous and know it all if you don't..........Cheers:)
