The living standard in Vietnam is very low, for an example the maid in my hotel makes $50.00 US a month that's about .15cents an hour. The cost of things here are not all that cheap. In Cambodia it is much worse, they work for about half that. There is no medical care, retirement along with no days off for the people. The people do seem happy even tho they have nothing they have time for a coke or cup of coffee and talk with you.

Did your mummy forget to wash your favourite baby blanket today? Or was your rattle stolen? Australia is the only country in the world which didn't go into recession in the current economic crisis. And why you may ask? Because our former Prime Minister John Howard had it in very good shape when he left office. We never have & never will be, a third world country. I will forgive your ignorance for you are probably just a little kid who actually believes the crap your media prints. You should know that hundreds of thousands of Indians have come to Australia because it is the best country on earth & their kids can get a decent education.

If you want to go with World Bank's indicator, it would be income & living cost-emphasized like this:

- below US$ 2 per day for poverty

- below US$ 1 per day for extreme poverty

However, every government have their own standard and criteria on how to define poverty and living standard. So, it's your choice to make.

Or maybe you could take a look at indicators defined at Human Development Index and World Development Report. You can download them for free (if I'm not mistaken) from UNDP's website.
