There´s this song called "Lips Of An Angel" by Hinder, it´s like an alternative rock song, but its very sweet and its really more on the soft side of rock....just in case you´re interested in checking it out. I´d highly recommend it. =)

But since you are looking for less heavy stuff, I´d say anything by "Relient K" is good indie music, and "Dashboard Confessional" are also a very soft rock band.

"Once Again" and "Beautiful" by Moka Only are pretty good RnB songs. And "Insatiable" by Darren Hayes is a good pop song to dance to.

"What Am I To You?" is a really nice song by Norah Jones, its kind of calming and sweet, so a good song to slow dance to.

Hope this helps. =)

Some more obscure or international stuff you probably haven't heard:
Loreena McKennitt- really great variety, new-age-ish
Depeche Mode- good for everyone!
L'Arc~en~Ciel- Great Japanese rock
AFI- Miss Murder isn't all they've got, nuh-uh.
Cara Dillon- Irish folk-type, good for relaxing and fun to listen to
Joss Stone- not bad
Chaba- J-rock/pop, interesting sound (classical instruments?)
Bond- string quartet gone clubbing
Try some classical (Dvorak is awesome) and soundtracks (Velvet Goldmine if you can find it)

Hope this helps!
