It helps adults relate to / understand children and not get upset when 5 year olds don't act like adults.

It also helps when trying to teach / explain concepts to children. Instructions should be in stage appropriate language / style.

To be able to help the child deal with life as the child meets new challenges in his/her world. It stabilizes the child's psyche and teaches him/her how to react to others. Parents should be able to see if their child is upset by something and be able to talk to their child about why this made them upset. Catching emotional trouble while the child is young will help the child as he/she grows up.
