The beloved pet gets to take a long, long nap. My price for saving animals is less than that...never more that $300.
I love all animals and there are so many who will thrive successfully on just food, water, shelter, a kind word and some patting. The animals who need more than that are in the hands of Mother Earth.

You have a dilema here. You have a responsibility to your pet to take care of it. You also want to help your friend. Maybe you could talk to the vet and see if you can pay part of it and then make payments on the balance. Many vets are willing to do this. That way maybe you could also help your friend. Another thing to do is to talk to your other mutual friends and see if they could all pitch in a bit to help your friend. Your family may be willing to help you out with your pet also. There is a way to get through this. Explore all your options.

First of all, why is the friend in a situation where they cannot pay their way? Is it a life and death situation? You need to think of yourself first. Will the vet accept payments? Or, can you actually guarantee the return of this loan to your friend in a timely fashion. Lending to friends is a tough issue. I have heard horror stories, and ultimately, friendships lost due to lending money and it not being returned. Are there other options for your friend? Can he/she take out a loan? Does he/she have collateral for a loan? How about items to pawn for the money? My advice is that you take care of your responsibilities first. You don't want this to effect YOUR credit, it's nice to help a friend, but not if you suffer for it, and a friend should understand that.

It's hard decision to make with such little information. The missing info is: why does your friend need the money? That info would be a great help in answering this question.
