It was only relatively recently that you could have education for free! In Greek and Roman times, you had to pay a tutor, or you had a tutor at home to teach you - you had to be rich to get an education, but you could not get rich if you were not educated!!!!

It was only in medieval times that education became available to all, for free. This was provided by the monasteries and the churches. However, very few indeed could read and write, let alone do maths! The education was based totally around the bible, and the stories therein. That is also why it is called Sunday School - the only day children were free to be educated at all!

Hope this helps!

I attended Burford School in the 1970's and it's the oldest shool in England.
The school was founded by Charter in 1571 and has been maintained continuously since that date. The present site was first used in 1949, when Burford Grammar School was enlarged, forming in effect Oxfordshire's first 'comprehensive' school.
