No that's not weird at all I had a dog that did the same thing. They don't realise that it is only light and like any dog when it chases something if it disappeared it figures that it must be hiding somewhere and so continues searching for it.
I don't think that it is bad for the dog (so long as you don't shine it into his eyes) and once you have finished playing whit it if you offer some distraction (like food or a different game) he will probably forget about it.

It's burning his retinas. If those were sold for people to chase, they would have been taken them off the market years ago, but because they are for pets, they are still out there without any warnings, most of the time.

Lasers are used to burn wrinkles off of your face, to burn images into CDs, etc. They are so bright that they burn whatever surface they land on. The laser being used for your dog is indeed a laser with capability to burn the retina and areas of the eye which are not equipped to handle bright light.

Remember your mom telling you not to stare at the sun or you would go blind? Same concept. The laser is too bright for eyes.

My advice is get him another toy and cease using it...and I sure hope you don't watch it go across the floor either. It can also harm humans.

Good luck!

You shouldn't play with laser pointers. They are for use in lecture rooms etc, they are not toys.

I'm sure your dog would get much more exercise both physically and mentally if you went outside and played ball with him.

You are doing damage to his (and probably your) eyes.

No, it's not.

It's like pretending to throw a ball. They'll look for it.

Your puppy wants to play! Play with him. :) It's not bad that he continues to look for it after you've turned the pointer off.

We used to do it to my dog all the time. She LOVED chasing the laser pointer!

i have one too for my cats they absolutely go nuts with it! one of them actually climbs the curtains to try to catch it. my advice "if it ain't broke..." your dog is enjoying himself and getting his exercise in the process where's the harm? however you might consider getting him another toy to occupy him when you aren't playing with the laser pointer
