I have recently moved into a house & there is a huge eucalyptus tree in the back garden that I really don't like, its taller than the house, does anyone have any idea how much it will cost to get it chopped down. I don't mind leaving the trunk, its just all the leaves & branches I can't stand.

There are too many variables to answer such a question. A lot depends on what's in the way - a tree in the middle of an empty field you can drop in one go, but one with a road, house, green house etc next to it will have to be dismantled bit by bit.

There's also the question of how close to the tree they can get kit such as the chipper. If the brash has to be dragged a long way it will push up the cost.

Could be anything from several hundred to several thousand pounds. Ring round and get quotes.

Tree surgery is a dangerous game, so you really need to make sure the tree surgeon you pick is qualified and competant and has adequate insurance. The Arboricultural Association produce a useful leaflet on how to pick a tree surgeon (arborist) which you can download from

Before considering cutting the tree you first need to know if the tree was protected IE has a Tree Protection Order attached to it, To find out call your local council ,all have a Tree Protection Officer.Ask if any trees in your area have a T. P. Order attached. A reputable tree surgeon/arborist can do this for you. (Fines of up to £10,000 can be levied against the owner and the person who cuts the tree)
.
As for cost it depends greatly on;

Access especially to remove debris
Obstacles or potential dangers e.g. Greenhouses, garden buildings, Power lines, etc.
Type, condition and age of tree

As a tree surgeon, for small to medium sized tree, I would charge at between £150-300 dependant on the factors mentioned above.

PS. Alternatively Substantially thinning the tree out could alleviate the problem to some degree. The eucalyptus has the ability to recover very quickly and can be kept in check by pruning annually to provide a very handsome plant

PPS If you intend to cut the tree yourself be very care full if you use a chainsaw you will need protective clothing. Chainsaws only bite once, remember gravity is constant and the tree will get you if it can.

Please don't attempt it yourself, a lot can go wrong with expensive or painful consequences.

Get some quotes from your local insured, qualified tree surgeons and pick the best one for you.

One point worth bearing in mind is that Eucalyptus is often cut down when it's young to encourage the small round leaves on the immature growth. As the tree gets older it produces the longer strappy leaves that yours probably has.

In other words it will probably re-sprout from the stump, so get a quote that includes stump removal.

Hope it goes well.

get some quotes from different people to compare. The Eucalyptus should be cut down though, its a very large tree with very shallow routes, any high winds and they can fall easily, and if its taller than your house and close enough it could cause a lot of damage. we have had to have 2 cut down and one fell but luckly missed anything important. Try to get it done before the storms really kick up.

I had a blue spruce estimated to be cut down about 700 dollars, it was twice as tall as my house and very large trunk. Yours probably be like 300 an hour, so 1-2 hours work.

It will depend on the size. Get a few quotes before committing yourself to anyone. We had a large oak tree lopped and it cost £300.00 and that included the contractors shredding all the lopped branches and leaves and removing them.
