Abuja is the Capital of Nigeria. The purpose-built city celebrated its 30th year of Founding in December 2006. The Full name of Abuja became Abuja Federal Capital Territory (or Abuja FCT) in 1976 when it was proposed. The original plan as proposed by the leadership General Murtala Mohammed and ratified, ironically by current President Olusegun Obasanjo who led Nigeria between '76 & '79 (after the former's 13 Feb '76 assasination), was to move the Capital far inland from coastline Lagos for reasons of national security. Geographically Abuja is at the very centre of Nigeria.

In 1991, the city officially became the Capital of Nigeria when General Ibrahim Badamasi Babanginda (apparently scared by a botched bloody coup attempt) moved the seat of power from Dodan Barracks in Lagos to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

I was in Boarding School in Abuja from 85-91 and have been back there a few times since then. It's beautiful, quiet but sort of "artificial" to me... especially compared to the rapacious Lagos that I was born and currently live in.

Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria, with an estimated population of 2.5 million. When it was decided to move the national capital from Lagos in 1976, a capital territory was chosen for a new city, located near the centre of the country. This "planned" city is located in the Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory, an attempt to reduce any real or perceived regional bias in a country which was formed by amalgamation of various tribal territories and emirates, under colonial influence.
