wow everyone chill out.
all of you americans(i know im generalizing) cant say the europeans owe their very existance to you, because the truth is if the europeans didnt want to discover more of the world and land on north america there wouldnt be USA. so technically u owe ur existance to the europeans.
and europeans, im sure cricket is very fun, but ive never played it and ive never seen it. so i dont know. anyways my point is, who cares what its called. it generates billions of dollars of profit for all the tv companies and sponsors.. so whatever its called it makes alot of money and it really doesnt matter why its called the world series.
this is why i elect to play hockey... LETS GO OILERS!

The first such series, played in 1901, was sponsored by the Boston newspaper, "The World". The name stuck. It has nothing to do with international competition. That's the reason that for the last 10 months, people have been careful to distiguish between the World Series champions (currently the St Louis Cardinals) and the World (Baseball Classic) champions, Japan. IThe US team didn't make it to the finals.)
Your first question on baseball! But I see that you have asked a series of intelligent questions, mainly on politics. That makes you a natural for a baseball fan, as the sport is referred to as "the thinking person's game".

America has the biggest Baseball Leagues, and players from different countries play for them. However, I don't agree to call the final series as "World Series" because only United States teams are playing that series. It's true that they have a lot of foreign players from a lot of countries, for example: Dominican Republic, Cuba, Japan, Korea, and more, but they're still American Teams, not world teams. I always compare a world series with the soccer world series. That a real world series! Every country in the whole world has its own team, and if they qualify, they'll play for the world cup. Now they're trying to do that with baseball. About your question, Yes! you're correct! That's not supposed to be called the "World Series".

The World Series is simply our name for our championship series.
There is a WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC, that has countries from around the world competing in a tournament.
Baseball did originate in America, but it's very popular across the globe as well. Japan, Korea, Cuba, the Dominican, etc.

I'm not a fan of the USA as a nation (but I'm sure most of the individuals are pleasant enough) and I used to get annoyed by "World Series" as well.
Then I heard that it was actually named after the New York "World" newspaper that supposedly sponsored major tournaments. So I thought, oh well perhaps it's not really that bad and that's what I was going to write here.
However, in the spirit of trying to get to the truth I thought I'd have a check to see if *that* was true.
It isn't.
Apparently back in the 1890s it was so named because a commercial sponsor (Spaldings) thought that eventually Australia, Britain, and other nations, would start to play baseball and so it would become a "World" series.
Obviously they'd never heard of cricket :-)
Anyway the name stuck. So it was down to arrogance, but arrogance that was nearly 120 years ago so it's a bit unfair blaming Americans today.
And that, apparently, is the truth.

Yes America does have the World Series. The worlds best players play in the American Major League. It is the number one competition in the world. The game is played in many more countries than you think. Japan, China, Cuba, Australia, Canada, South Africa, China, Italy, Korea, etc Seeing that Cricket has about 10 Countries in it's international competition it doesn't sound like such a small game. Remember it was played at the Olympics for a couple of years and there is was a World Competiton played just last year

It may seem odd, but "conceited" is hardly the word to use. You are taking "World Series" far too literally. At the time it was begun in 1903, it really WAS the World Series, as it was played in very few parts of the world.
Also, I am assuming you are European. Europeans have no right to criticize Americans, as we have pulled your sorry "arses" out of two WORLD wars. If not for our brave soldiers, (and some even played in the WORLD series), you all would be speaking German in what used to be your countries before we saved you. It is amazing to see some of the lengths you Europeans will go to to ridicule Americans. You owe your very existence to us.

It is called the World Series, due to the historical fact that at the time of the first championship, the rosters were represented by immigrants from the "old World". By having the international flair, the contest was coined "World Series" for more info go to this site: http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb_news.jsp?ymd=20030919&content_id=534019&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp

I truly don't know why the World series is called that. All I know is that it doesn't really matter what people call it because many people enjoy watching it. You Brits are just using this as another excuse to pick on the U.s. just because A couple of american farmboys beat up on your whole army. Perhaps its resentment because you once had the greatest empire in the world, but lost it all. Just chill out, americans don't mean you any harm.
