Physiological saline is isotonic to blood cells, i.e., it has the same solute (dissolved salts) concentration as the inside of the blood cells. The cells thrive in a physiological saline solution because the net gain or loss of water within the cells is negligible. The cells are said to be in a state of dynamic equilibrium with the surrounding fluid.
