You weren't clear about whether what you actually write is lyrics or whole songs (lyrics AND music).

If you only write lyrics, there isn't much chance that a record company will want them. They are looking for complete songs with music.

You need to partner with someone who writes music who can turn your lyrics into full songs, record them and THEN you can submit them to record companies although when you're just starting out, you're better off going directly to local and regional artists and seeing if they be interested in performing and/or recording your songs. Once you establish a name for yourself, big name artists and record companies will come to you.

It’s very important to protect your work from those who might try to profit from it. You need to get your songs copywritten. DO NOT use what is called "the poor man's copyright" by mailing a copy of it to yourself. This is not recognized legally anywhere.

I don't know how copyrighting works in South Africa, but in the US to copyright your work, go to the Library of Congress website where you can download a copy of form PA, fill it out and you'll have to send them a check or money order to cover the administrative fee, currently $45.00.

Artists can either copyright songs individually, in which case they have to pay the full fee for each one, or copyright several songs as one work and pay the fee once. In your case, since you may be sending songs to different people, it would probably be best to copyright the songs you're going to submit individually.

You send in your payment, the form and a copy of your work on CD or tape and they send you your copyright a few months later (there's huge backlog of artists copyrighting their work so it takes a while).

Even in South Africa there's probably talent agents out there, you probably need to look for them, basically you probably need an agent and maybe you'd be able to find out more about some on the net but be careful of scams.
