I guess it really depends on what you want to believe. If to you they are real - then that's what counts. I used to tell my kids that there was magic in the world that you couldn't see or touch. But it was there none the less. And somewhere in the world there was a unicorn. If you are interested in alternative points of view try reading Dreams Underfoot by Charles DeLint. It is all about just that topic told in short stories. He also has some other novels that are good.

Fantasy are less of a fantasy than real world.
Just visit third-world country. You'll know what I mean.
