i cannot figure out what i need to do to get video on this thing . ive tried several different types and every time it says its either to large or the wrong type and what not ... its driving me crazy .

there is an appliaction you get with the player to convert video files in order to transfer them.
i think its called creative media source.

I think you should have got a video converter software together with the purchase of the Creative Zen. From there you could change the file type to the one that Creative Zen supports. Good Luck!
