Why are people so repulsed by the idea of ending the human race? Let's stop having children and let all human life peacefully come to an end. We'll all be long gone. We're only peaceful when we're in deep sleep or deceased. Afterall, everything that's good rests in the unknown. This is not a pessimist's outcry. I suppose that by asking why we don't end life, I am simultaneously asking why we go on living, besides the fact that the survival instinct is hardwired in the human brain? I believe no matter what "divine" reason people have for bearing children, they really bring another human being into this world either because they're not prepared or they're ultimately seeking some kind of self-love, gratification, empowerment, etc. etc. Please provide me with serious insights. I am not actually going to try and massacre all of mankind. Why do you have or want children?

Maybe with genetic research we can start only having children that have the intelligence necessary to put more back into the world than they take out of it.

People have children because it's natural. Even though highly alienated, we are still an animal species.
To answer your question, of when is the end, I'd say we don't need to do much about it, as we are succumbing to globalization in such a fast way, that thanks to global warming, lack of social conscience, hunger for power, and after having created an unnecessary lifestyle, there is hardly a way back or out.
This means that nature will take it's course and the planet, although seriously wounded, will eliminate our civilization, or most of it. A million years is nothing for this planet. If there are any survivors, they will have to learn to live together in a different way.
I personally think that bringing a child into our world is a lack of responsibility towards this child, if we are not ready to act against globalization, because we are condemning it to a very uncertain future.

As you said, the survival instinct is hard wired in the brain. Not only for the individual but also for the specie.
