The prefix "homo" refers to things that are the same as one another. If something is "homogenous" it means they are the same - If a person is "homosexual" it means that, sexually, they are attracted to people of the same sex.
"Hetero" is basically the opposite: things that are the opposite, or at least noticably different, to one another. This means that if someone is "heterosexual" they are attracted to people of the opposite sex.
Hope this helps!

"Etymologically, the word homosexual is a Greek and Latin hybrid with the first element derived from Greek homos, 'same' (not the unrelated Latin word homo, 'man', as in Homo sapiens), thus connoting sexual acts and affections between members of the same sex, including lesbianism." Homo means man, or the same. Like homogeneous means the same, while heterogeneous means opposite or varied.

adjective 1. of, pertaining to, or exhibiting heterosexuality.
2. Biology. pertaining to the opposite sex or to both sexes.
–noun 3. a heterosexual person.
adj.
Sexually oriented to persons of the opposite sex.
Of or relating to different sexes.
1. sexually attracted to members of the opposite sex [ant: homosexual, bisexual]
noun
1. a heterosexual person; someone having a sexual orientation to persons of the opposite sex
adjective 1. of, pertaining to, or exhibiting homosexuality.
2. of, pertaining to, or noting the same sex.
–noun 3. a homosexual person.
Usage Note: Many people now avoid using homosexual because of the emphasis this term places on sexuality. Indeed, the words gay and lesbian, which stress cultural and social matters over sex, are frequently better choices. Homosexual is most objectionable when used as a noun; here gay man and gay woman or lesbian and their plural forms are called for. It is generally unobjectionable when used adjectivally, as in a homosexual relationship, although gay, lesbian, or same-sex are also available for adjectival use.
