Check your fonts - normally there are various symbol fonts - all you need to do is figure out the letter on the keyboard associated with the symbol you need.
Kind of a pain really. There also used to be specific key combinations one could type in that would bring up a character.
My simple solution was to type all the characters I needed into a document and save it. I'd just copy from the symbols doc to whatever I was typing. Things like the copyright sign, math, whatever.

You mean like the line with an arrow at the end? It's been a while, sorry.
Look for the drawing toolbar under the "view" menu (in my version of Word, anyway) and turn it on and you'll see a menu item that looks like the vector sign, then click it, click on where you want the vector sign or line to start, drag to where you want it to end and then let go.

In MSWord, go to the INSERT tab. Look towards the right side and you'll see Equations and Symbols. Open that up and voila.
