As far as Eng Lit is concerned, Shakespeare (who of course was writing for the Tudors, who had an extremely dodgy claim to the throne) set the benchmark for most people's perception of Richard, our last English king. Shakespeare portrayed Richard as a monster which is simply not true. Argument is still raging about whether or not Richard or Henry Tudor was responsible for the murder of the Princes in the Tower but, that aspect aside, Richard was actually a good king, with a reputation of being fair and just as a ruler. It was essential that Henry blackened Richard's name because of his vvery weak claim to the throne. To help strengthen his position he killed off the rest of the Plantangenet heirs except one, Elizabeth, and he married her.
Shakespeare's play is a mixture of fiction and Tudor propaganda
and he has a lot to answer for!

Um, they killed him. I guess that changed him.

In August 1485, Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, who was a Lancastrian claimant to the throne landed in South Wales. He marched east and engaged Richard in battle on Bosworth Field on 22 August. Although Richard possessed superior numbers, several of his key lieutenants defected. Refusing to flee, Richard was killed in battle and Henry Tudor took the throne as Henry VII.

Oh, I'm sorry. I just re-read your question. You're talking about English Literature, right? Richard III, the play by Sharespeare?

Here goes:

The withered arm, crooked back and limp of legend are almost certainly fabrications. They possibly originated from the questionable history by Thomas More, which made a deep impression upon Shakespeare.
