well for most of the movie, the bad guys where there to confuse the hostages. They moved people in and out of rooms, mixed in with them, basically made sure that no one had a clear view of who was a bad guy and who wasn't. Meanwhile, someone was digging a hole in the storage room, and breaking into the bank owners deposit box. When the hole was dug, they made a false back of the storage room about a 1-2 feet forward from the real back. Then Clive Owen's character stayed behind in that area. Then everyone, hostages and robbers left the bank disguised, everyone except for Owen. No money was stolen. The police questioned everyone but couldn't identify any of the robbers, or how many there were. Owen lived in that space about a week, then he walked out of there and out the front, with the diamonds they stole from the bank owners deposit box.

so basically he got away by not leaving when the police first arrived, he left when the coast was clear, and he just mixed in with the regular customers.
