Most laptops come standard with a 2 or 3 year warranty. I'd contact Dell.
In most cases, a Lithium-Ion battery will easily last 3-4 years with average use. If you constantly charge and drain the battery, it's life will be much shorter. Although it's not typical, some batteries do fail prematurely as well.
Hopefully it's still covered.

Dear I used to work for dell for many years..And only have the highest respect for their products although..Dell doesn't ever make anything. They assemble the best and proven parts of every major manufacture to make a superb product.I haven't worked for them for many years but assure you that im still convinced of dells products and still recommend them to anyone.I personally have built my own machines and decided that dell could build better for cheaper. You might want to talk to dell service about your issue.. But there is one thing that I can tell you that I have learned with every computer on the market that is dell or non dell ..The batteries in the notebooks will very seldom carry a charge long enough to last over maximum if you are lucky two hours..at the most.I even purchased a 12 hour super battery that still last at most two hours.I have been told by people that work in the field of producing batteries for laptops is there is no way to make a battery yet for computers that are on the market that will last for any length of time.I have owned many different labtops of different manufactures and also have three personally .its not really a dell problem is just a battery design problem that isn't solved yet.. and the problem they have recently had with exploding batteries is not their issue either. It was sony's problem..so take into consideration the things I have told you .I have been working with computers many many years ,many makes and models and never had a battery to stand up for what I needed yet.. Maybe someone will design a better battery in the future. If i had the intelligence to solve this I would ,believe me that there is a lot of money to be made for this discovery but you have to think if the Japanese have not conquered it yet then what hopes do we have that it will be found..But do call dell if your machine is under warranty and their service has been improved 100 fold over the last few years..They can help but don't expect a miracle just yet for a battery that last.. Always keep your notebook in a case and the plug just in case you need it..Hope this helps..

each battery is diverse. maximum inventory batteries provide you a pair of million.5 to 2 hours. The prolonged existence batteries provide you between 3 and four hours. i offered and supported over 3 hundred laptops in my profession and that i haven't seen a battery bypass undesirable merely simply by fact it did not run all the way down to 0%. that's often simply by fact there exchange right into a layout flaw. The battery in my workstation selection infrequently is going all the way down to 0% and that i value it at diverse ability levels. that's a inventory battery that still performs to parameters and has lasted 2 years so far.

Well, all notebooks and there battery's are different so it could be faulty, which is just bad luck but send it in if you are still under warranty or it could be that the notebook that you bought just has a battery that does not last that long and the reason your friends lasted this long could be because she users hers allot more then you.
(nowa days battery's will last longer the more frequently you use them)

On regular use, this is normal for a laptop battery. Have no fear, just get a new battery!
