This is a really interesting questions. Thank you for asking it. Racism is part of discrimination, as you already know, is not something new. Romans practiced racism on the countries they occupied like Egypt and Syria (or BIG syria by that time). And one of their racist actions is choosing gladiators to fight until death, or executing christians for their believes.
Racism generates from fear of something you do not know. If you enter a shop to buy a BMV while wearing an expensive suit from a famous store for example, the sellers are going to be interested in selling you the car more than someone who wears a T-shirt and a slipper. Althoug, the guy with the slippers may be richer than you.
People are generally scared from anything that is Different. That is why the church wanted to execute Galileo because he said the truth. They were scared of DIFFERENT ideas.
That is why people are generally suspicious when meeting someone of different color, religion or even ideas.

racism is not just an American theme, it's a global situation and racism is also more than just what color someone is, it's what they have and how differently they respond or act from what you think it should be. sooooo, i believe it's fear of unknown and prideful, everybody thinks their way is the best or most right way and the unknowns might force their way of life to something that you've believed your whole life and most people can't handle that they may have lived their whole life wrong. so they have to be right, so the other must be wrong which = racism against who, what and why which turns into color, slant eye, big nose kinda thing. IT"S FEAR

The Reason Racism exists is because when we fear something we know nothing about we tend to do the next best thing is to attack it.. So,the reason we still have it .is because it is passed on down from the people before them..but, eventually there will be no one pure race we all will be mixed together as 1...
RACE..of human race..
Good Luck

Because of fear. Hate stems from fear of the unknown. For instance (although many other forms of racism exist), a white male member of the Ku Klux Klan will probably NEVER look up his family lineage if he is between 21 and 65 because chances are there's a black bloodline somewhere in between. So...fear o the unknown spawns hate of the unknown.

Because a person is either raised to be a certain way, or has had a negative experience. This causes them to retain a certain belief. It is incredibly hard to change someone's mind because the average person is too proud to admit being wrong. Thus, it is a self-perpetuating cycle. Unfortunately, racism will never go away.

what you do not know you do not understand. What you do not understand you do not trust. What you do not trust you fear. What you fear you hate. What you hate you build prejudice against. Thats what causes racism. So the best way to beat it is to share knowlege and information freely.
Biologically we are all one species, only the varieties differ.

Perhaps it is because one race becomes OVERWHELMED with the apparent apathy of another race (or the majority thereof) when it comes to their concern about advancing their lot by way of education, honest work and civic pride.

It is in our nature, a fruit of jealousy, selfishness....together with all our good characteristics, nobody can deny it, only some people let those black sides of them rule them, others learn to control themselves and change themselves to accept other people by who they are and what they got inside and not by physical appearance.

Some people seem to confuse race with social status. Since in poorer communities the crime rate is higher and in those communities the number of minorities are also higher. People who cannot understand logical reasoning blame the race and not the surroundings. They also do not understand evolution in general. We all started the same color. Through evolution we all changed in differant ways to adapt to our environments. Racist people are in serious need of some schooling.

I think a lot of racists are just raised that way....they carry that racism on to their children and it just continues on.
