You know it was really the Vikings and before them it was some Irish monks led by a monk named Brendan. Also you know Columbus wasn't Italian, he was from the Catalan region of Spain!!! So why do we have a national holiday honoring him?!?! He just made it to the carribean, stole some natives and left disease and men who stirred up trouble!!

You this is not really a question, right? You know I should report you for ranting, right?

Of course, Columbus didn't discover the Americas, and King Ferdinand didn't believe the earth was flat. And really, where Columbus was born has no bearing on the price of tea in China.

Why do we have a holiday? Why not? Columbus did focus attention on the "New World", whether or not he may have been lying about trying to get to India.

Oh, BTW, you strike me as the type who might be interested in Farley Mowat's book "The Farfarers: Before the Norse" It's avaliable in paperback at most Barnes and Nobles (in the US) and Chapters (in Canada). If not you can find it on Amazon or ILL from your local library. Enjoy.

I did know that, but I don't write history books. Did you know that Paul Revere was not the one that made the historical ride to warn that the British were coming? He did ride on his horse, but only about 17 miles or something like that. The real person was a man named Israel Bissell (pardon if this is a misspelling of his name.) History is not always fact; sometimes it is just a story.
