What is "Bollywood"?
Bollywood is the name given to the Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry in India. When combined with other Indian film industries (Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada), it is considered to be the largest in the world in terms of number of films produced, and maybe also the number of tickets sold.
The term Bollywood was created by conflating Bombay (the city now called Mumbai) and Hollywood (the famous center of the United States film industry).
Bollywood films are usually musicals. Few movies are made without at least one song-and-dance number. Indian audiences expect full value for their money; they want songs and dances, love interest, comedy and dare-devil thrills, all mixed up in a three hour long extravaganza with intermission. Such movies are called masala movies, after the spice mixture masala. Like masala, these movies have everything.
The plots are often melodramatic. They frequently employ formulaic ingredients such as star-crossed lovers, corrupt politicians, twins separated at birth, conniving villains, angry parents, courtesans with hearts of gold, dramatic reversals of fortune, and convenient coincidences.
What is Bollywood dancing?
Bollywood dancing is a commercial name for modern Indian dancing. It's a combination of classical Indian dance (which is the base), folk dancing such as Bhangra and sometimes has a Latino and Arabic influence. It's fun and very expressive and there's a lot of deep meaning behind music in the films. You can actually express what the music means, through the graceful movements of the body.
What's the future for Bollywood?
The future looks even brighter for Bollywood. Big US film companies such as Warner Bros and Twentieth Century Fox are setting up offices in India. Where Indian film makers have found it difficult to compete with Hollywood's special effects, this is seen as the next big area for Bollywood to develop

Bollywood is India's film industry. That's all you really need to know, besides the fact that inadequate acting skills and horrible plots can be made up for with dance and song sequences. This is the same reason that one sees the same 3 or 4 Indian actors in English films, usually older generation, because the current generation's acting is about as good as what one can expect on the WB or Lifetime (for Americans). If you don't believe me, try watching Bride and Prejudice, or these hindi movies that are supposedly nominated for Oscars, though I have never seen one nominated. Sit through the whole thing and I'll salute you. More recently a movie named Rang De Basanti came out, and Indians said it was Oscar nominated......when in fact it would not be nominated for even a super saver cinema in the West. Complete rubbish. So the question is not what is Bollywood....but why Bollywood? Beats me.....and I'm Indian!

India is the largest movie producers in the world with more than 1000 per year. Bollywood is the center for hindi movies of which produces about 300 per year and is located in Bombay (now Mumbai).
It started with a studio system and slowly drifted to independent and private producers and production companies.
The Bollywood movies have emerged from entertaining the front benchers who escape for 3 hours from reality to some very good new era international standards movies.
Bollywood movies are very popular around the globe incl Russia, China, Iran, Africa, West Indies etc etc. Now they are being screened at US & Canad theatres.
The gross revenues at box office for the first week screenings have been in millions $USD with the premeires being held in USA & Canada.
Story lines, and all the technical aspects have considerably improved. The new generation of producers and directors have put Bollywood on the world map.
However, the world's largest film studio complex is not in Mumbai but in Hydearbad which is in Andhra Pradesh Sate about 500 miles away from Bombay in the SouthCentral India where at least 60 Hollywood movies were made. It is a very large scale complex even bigger/better than Disney, Universal, MGM etc.
A movie made in Hollywood can cost more than 60 million USD whereas the same can be made in Hyderabad for 6 million USD.
There is a new wave in Bollywood whereupon they are making Hinglish movies. (English movies with the backdrop and language of India)
