I THINK THE PAST WAS WORSE BECAUSE THEY WERE NO LAWS AGAINST GENOCIDES AND STUFF!

People were mean to each other in the past? Yes.
People are still mean to each other now, although not as much in certain places and countries.
We have gone a long way.
Ignorance, fear, and racial discriminations have much to do with it.
Education and religion helped us learn about acceptance and tolerance of each other. Color of the skin is just color of the skin, our capacity for physical and mental growth is equal.
When human beings are raised together in the same spirit , we all manifest varied strengths that complement each other.

For the same reasons they're mean to each other today. Ignorance and religious differences. And some people are mean to take attention away from their own faults and insecurities.

you're kidding right? Have you seen what's been going on in the mid-east lately? People (mainly radical religious groups) have been mean to each other forever it seems. It's mostly about power, money, religious differences. Unfortunately the phrase "can't we all just get along" will never apply to such groups.
