Usually it's best to hire another lawyer to defend you, you might assist with the case, but it's best if it's handled by another attorney. Most attorneys hire someone else. Emotions, etc can get in the way of judgment.

My cousin that is an attorney represented himself fighting against his condo association. He is an excellent attorney but he thought he could handle it without a problem. He said if it was criminal, etc he would hire an attorney but because it wasn't a big deal he could handle it. He lost. He did however hire a colleague for the appeal and won. Later when we talked about it he said that he was just too close to the case, he was angry with the association and it clouded his judgment. A mistake he didn't make for the appeal.

It is always better to hire a lawyer to represent you because although you may be experienced, another lawyer will be able to objectively view the case without as much emotion.

A lawyer must be represented by another lawyer in a case so that it will be properly handled without any personal inclination. Likewise, it is very hard for a lawyer to ask himself and answer his own questions during direct examination.

I've worked for attorneys for over 10 years and I've seen the very experienced lawyers hire other lawyers for themselves.

A lawyer,as a rule, should never conduct his own defence, like a surgeon should never operate on his wife and children;there is to much emotional involvement, wheras defence is build on objectively calculated factors and risks involved.

Only a fool represents himself-- I know that is the first thing they teach in law school..... besides how can you be objective if you are emotionally involved?

If it is something minor, do it yourself. If it major, hire another lawyer.
