The macro answer - technology is increasing productivity, so there is diminishing need for workers, while the population globally is booming out of control. Employment used to spread the wealth around in the form of wages.

We now have automation and machines that can do what so many people used to do. Also, the wages given are disproportionate. The more education (which costs money and is beyond the reach of the poor oftimes) the more you make, while the poor are stuck at minimum wage. Here the Government comes in. They have provided alot of tax deductions promoting the wealthy. Also, minimum wage has not risen for at least 5 years, keeping the poor man down. The cost of consumables has risen, but not wages. In a more perfect world, there would not be the huge gap we have.

There is always going to be a widening gap between the rich and poor.

Any assistance the "poor" receives is spent. (if they had discretionary income, they would't be poor)

A larger protion of the "rich" save a much larger portion of their income. As these savings grow, the gap widens.

However, if you remove the ability of people to accumulate wealth (ie socialism, etc), you will also remove the incentive for people to improve their station. You will end up with a much narrower gap, but it will be because there are far more people in true poverty (starving, etc) and far fewer rich.

Be careful what you wish for when you ask for the government to lend a hand in income redistribution (Consider: Cuba, USSR, North Korea, pre-Capitalist China, etc)

The government doesn't give a flying **** . You should have watched this freaky azz movie I was watching at like 3 am called
" Surviving the Game " . Its where these rich people recruit this poor homeless guy to be a target for their hunting game. If the guy survives he'll get a whole bunch of moolah. It was just sick.
