Though simple, it is quite a good question, because people buy first and think later!

When we buy a branded PC, the company (or the vendor) is responsible that the PC will work as a unit, at least for the period under which it is in warranty. However, the cost of the whole unit is sufficiently higher than the cost of the parts put together. For first time users, a branded PC is safer, because they experiment too much.

On the other hand an assembled is wonderful for those who know something of hardware, and can upgrade whenever they like, with the parts they like. There is no guarantee whether the parts put together, but with hard work one is able to know which parts should be purchased. If we want to have a dream PC, then we have to go in for an assembled one.

Dear Friend,
It is best to get an assembeled PC. But make sure that all the components that you buy are compatible in the HCL(Hardware Compatibility Test). The kind of use of the computer and your budget decides it. If you go in for a branded one you'll end up paying around Rs.5,000 to Rs.15,000 more just for the name. I am just 13 and a RHCE. Well, depending on where you work you might be able to get a good deal on a DELL. For example, I know IKEA and Target do that. That's how i got a good deal on mine. Very reliable too, lasted at least 4 years after many hazards. Digital and physical. Some companies have offers like that. But, you need a special passcode so ask your boss at work first. They will probably tell some long URL to go to and then some code to enter.

Alternatively you could get a very good deal at an electronics store like Fry's, Best Buy, or Circuit City if your just looking for a computer for basic home use like:e-mail, web, word, and stuff like that.

Note: if you're not very tech savvy you should probably try and have someone who is help you shop for your computer. So, you don't get ripped off with a bad brand adn less than you need or more than you need and having to take out a second mortgage on your house.

Being a computer vendor, i would suggest a branded if you are looking for replacement of parts on time (I would like to strecth that this plays a significant part in after sales).
But if you r okay with your computer not working for a week, then an assembled usually gives you a cheaper option.
