Make sure your son has solid acting training. Talent Agents want to see that a prospective client is well-trained and worked with top acting teachers.

Talent Agents go to the theatre searching for prospective clients. If your son is actively performing in local theatre he should mail a flyer/invitation to the Talent Agents in your city inviting them to attend a performance of the show in which he is performing. Otherwise, they don't know he exists as a performer.

If you live in a "Right-to-Work State" your son can call any talent agent in your city and request an audition interview.

NEVER pay a talent agency. Legitimate talent agents are ONLY entitled to a 10% commision when the actor books a role through the talent agency that submitted him on the project. The agent takes 10% off the top and writes a check payable to the actor.

If you are NOT in a right-to-work state, your son should mail a flyer of the production he is in, to all of the legitimate Talent Agents and casting directors, in the city where you live.

Your son needs to perform as much as possible so he can be seen by agents and casting directors.

If a Talent Agents asks for money they are NOT a legitimate Talent Agency.

Agents should be a member of the Association of Talent Agents

First, determine if your son is getting a lot of auditions, booking commercials, print work, movies, voiceovers, etc and television work, to warrant looking for representation for him.

Typically, kids have a Talent Manager, NOT a Talent Agent. There is a difference. The talent manager oversees the auditions and offers the child actor gets and works hand-in-hand with the parents of the child.
