To achieve Enlightenment. Of course, how you define that is up to you, but for me it's gaining an ever deeper understanding of how the universe, people, and everything else works. I also tend to believe in reincarnation, so I believe that, through subsequent lifetimes, we strive to gain wisdom. To what ultimate end, who knows, but I think it's a need in all of us, even more basic than our animal instincts.

Of course, the answer will be a highly personal one, unique to each person.
My "ultimate goal" is to raise my sons to be men of honour, compassion, integrety and dignity; men who find their passion in life and pursue it with their whole hearts. Men who care about others and lead a life that uplifts those around them.
That, and to enrich the lives of others through the gift of music.

Knowing the purpose of 'human' birth, to start with and then to pursue it as the only priority (incidentally, history has abundant evidence that this priority does not hinder performance of any life oriented activity, but in fact, enhances the capability to the maximum possible peak!)

As a parent, and a grandparent. I would say that my goal is to raise children that think well of themselves and others, have empathy. And to raise children that do not terrorize others.
And to teach children to read, read read.
Children that are able to read and understand, can go anywhere!
