I can't remember what my doctor said those were from but it doesn't have anything to do with dilation. I felt them with all three of my girls throughout my entire pregnancy. They get worse as you get further along so be prepared. Near the end I could have sworn the baby was standing straight up and dancing on my cervix.

When I went into the hospital the first time, I knew my baby was coming soon. I felt very "heavy" in my lower abdomen. After I was released, they told me I was 3 cm dilated. I couldn't walk normally. I waddled with my legs spread and I swore that baby was falling out of me. I had him 1 1/2 days later. It's not so easy to describe. You just know it.

THe only time I actually "felt" myself dilate was when I sat on one of those bouncy balls. I went from a 4 to a 9 in literally a few seconds. I thought I was going to pass out...LOL.
But I was also at 3cm for close to 3 months - and that was with my first pregnancy. He had no idea what was keeping the baby up! It was an odd kind of pressure.
Good luck!

It could be the baby's head has dropped into position. I was dilated to 3 and did not feel a thing.

You don't notice the dilating, no. You don't even notice when you're 10 cm. And the pains are probably from the baby's head dropping.

You don't actually feel yourself dilateing but the pains in your lower vaginal area/ abdomen may very well be contrations.

Not for me, I was 1 cm dilated at my checkup on Friday and had no idea. I do have pain though, but it is because my baby's head is engaged already.

I always felt a sharp quick pain down there, not a contraction pain. And sure enough i was right.I'm not saying you can always tell but in my case I did.
